When a drug-sniffing German Shepherd found a bag of marijuana underneath a seat in the Firebaugh High School Auditorium at a town hall meeting last month, those in attendance knew about it immediately.

BELL—With most of the City Council that turned this Los Angeles suburb into a national symbol of municipal corruption facing a recall election next month, many of those who led the fight to boot them from office have lined up to replace them.

1 Killed, 1 Injured in Fire at Apartment Building

One person was killed and another injured in an early morning fire last Thursday at an abandoned apartment building in Lynwood.
The fire was reported at 3:36 a.m. in the 12500 block of Long Beach Boulevard, near Palm Avenue, Los Angeles County Fire Department Dispatch Supervisor Michael Pittman said.
Firefighters declared a knockdown on the blaze about 10 minutes later, Pittman said. [Read More...]

Deputy D.A. Trujillo to Run for District Attorney

Deputy District Attorney Mario Trujillo told the Nuestra Comunidad last week that he intends to run for district attorney next year.
Trujillo, past president of the Mexican American Bar Association, announced his candidacy at MABA’s installation dinner this past Saturday night.
He said that he is entering the race on the assumption that incumbent Steve Cooley, who has not ruled out running for a fourth term, will decide not to do so. “I will not run against Mr. Cooley,” he said. [Read More...]
Redevelopment Agency Hosts Open House

The cities of Lynwood and Carson held an open house on Saturday, January 29, at 4547 Cardwell Street in Lynwood, to showcase one of four homes built and up for sale by a partnership between the Lynwood Redevelopment Agency (RDA) and the city of Carson.
Mayor Aide Castro spoke at the event and noted that there are over 277 foreclosed homes in Lynwood, she hoped to remedy that situation “one foreclosed home at a time if we must.” [Read More...]
New Test May Help Guide Prostate Cancer Treatment

NEW YORK—A new experimental test may someday help doctors with one of the most vexing problems in cancer therapy: identifying which prostate cancer patients need aggressive treatment.
Currently, once prostate cancer is diagnosed, doctors have no reliable way to know which cases are life-threatening. Most are not. So doctors have a difficult time determining whether they should monitor the cancers to see if they progress or recommend immediate treatment, such as surgery or radiation. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa’s panel includes a former governor who received generous donations from entities connected to the owner of Anschutz Entertainment Group; entertainment executives that have partnered with the firm or its affiliates; and business owners who have served alongside company president and CEO Tim Leiweke on local civic boards and commissions.
